Originally constructed in 1949 as the largest movie theater in the U.S, The Museo Alameda was built by a local San Antonio businessman who dedicated the vision and purpose of the new endeavor to Spanish language entertainment.
When the theater had fallen into disrepair by 1991, San Antonio leaders promoted the rebirth of the Alameda to recognize the historic contributions of Latinos to America's rich cultural heritage. The project had so much interest and support, by 1996 the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C. designated The Alameda as the first formal affiliate of the Smithsonian outside of Washington.
Now designed as the official State Latino Museum, The Museo Alameda has been restored to its original beauty and seats 2,400 for special events. Productions include theater, dance, music and films. Unique programming is a hallmark of The Alameda, which also benefits from its partnership with the John F. Kenney Center for Performing Arts.
