San Antonio SpursThe San Antonio Spurs are the storied NBA team from the Alamo City, representing San Antonio's only major sports franchise. They are a huge force in professional basketball, winning four NBA championships, setting several NBA attendance records and winning 69.6 percent of their games since 1997, the best record in any professional sport.

The team began as the Dallas Chaparrals, playing in the now-defunct ABA league. After a shakeup between the ABA and the NBA, the Spurs were one of four teams to remain intact and transition from the ABA to the NBA. In addition, the San Antonio Spurs are the only former ABA team to win an NBA championship.

The Spurs play at the AT&T Center, a voter-approved facility specifically built as a home for the team, which previously played at the less-intimate Alamodome. The Spurs are in the Southwest Division of the Western Conference.

Notable San Antonio Spurs players through the years include George "the Iceman" Gervin in the late 1970s and early 1980s, when the team won the Midwest Division five out of six years. The Spurs then acquired David Robinson in the late 1980s, a move that turned the team into a championship contender. The addition of Tim Duncan brought the team its first championship in 1999.
